The GeForce 8800GT is a video card that is gathering a large amount of support from the enthusiast press, and enthusiastic gamers. People are buzzing about the 8800GT because it competes with the high-end offerings by NVidia and AMD on performance while falling in mid-range pricing, costing up to half of the high-end parts.

The 8800GT is meant to fall between the 8800GTS and GTX processors, but benchmarks show the GT often outperforming the GTS and matching the GTX. Similar to the GTS, NVidia include a dedicated video processing chip to handle media encoding/decoding, offloading those calculations from the CPU. The 65nm process makes for a cooler running card allowing a slim cooling solution that takes only one slot, instead of the two that the higher-end cards use. XFX's offering of the 8800GT comes bundled with a free copy of Company of Heroes, a lifetime warranty, and uses NVidia's reference cooling design of a slimline fan.
The Chip
The 8800GT is built off the code name G92 architecture, which is a derivative of the G80 architecture that provides the foundation for the 8800GTS/GTX systems. The main changes made to the G92 are the 65nm production process, and rolling in the display, and video processing chips directly into the GPU. The number of transistors has increased from 681 million to 754 million. Despite the larger number of transistors, the G92 chip is almost half the size of the G80 and consumes significantly less power, due to the 65nm technology.
Differences with GTS and GTX
The 8800GT features less texture and stream processing capabilities than its more expensive brethren. The GT also has a narrower memory bus between the GPU and the video RAM, however actual memory bandwidth is only 10% less than that found on the GTS due to the higher clockspeed found on the GT. In real world applications the smaller bandwidth becomes an issue when running at resolutions near 1080p and above, with anti-aliasing active.
